A solid start by lefty Ryan Bollinger and home runs by Jake Blackwood (who also had five RBI), Reggie Abercrombie, Josh Mazzola and Casey Haerther gave the Goldeyes a 18-5 win over the Gary Southshore RailCats in front of 5,011 damp, chilly spectators at Shaw Park on Sunday. In a game that was supposed to start at 1:30 p.m., rain and a wet field forced the Fish and ‘Cats to wait until 6 p.m. to throw the first pitch. For the Goldeyes, it was worth the wait. Winnipeg pounded out 20 hits en route to its franchise record-setting 63rd victory of the season. The victory also put an end to Garys playoff hopes. As a result, the 63-36 Goldeyes will open the American Association post-season on Wednesday night at Shaw Park against the 53-45 Lincoln Saltdogs. “I saw the ball pretty well tonight and was able to get some barrels on the ball and then find some gaps with some backspin on the ball. It felt good tonight,” said Blackwood, who was clearly the player of the game. “I had a few games like that in Kansas City (when he was league MVP) and a couple in affiliated ball. All the guys were hitting and contributing tonight and Ryan gave us another great start. I dont think Id want to play against us right now.” The Goldeyes bats boomed on Sunday. Winnipeg scored three in the first on RBI by Tyler Kuhn and Haerther, then added one in the third on an RBI double by Donnie Webb and one more in the fourth on a solo homer by Blackwood, his 10 th of the season. Then with the score 5-1, the Fish put up seven in the sixth as Blackwood drove in two more with a double, Abercrombie hit a two-run homer – his team-leading 18th of the year - and then Mazzola hit a two-run bomb, his 16 th of the season. But Gary didnt quit. The RailCats scored four in the seventh and cut Winnipegs lead to 12-5. That, however, just seemed to make the Fish angry. In the bottom of the seventh, Kuhn drove in his third run of the game with a single and then Haerther hit his 12 th homer of the season, a three-run blast over the right-centrefield fence, to give the Fish a 16-5 advantage. Luis Alen singled home a run and Blackwood doubled home another in the eighth to round out the scoring. In the end, Blackwood had four hits, a homer, three doubles, a walk and five RBI, Kuhn had two hits and three RBI and Haerther had two hits, a homer and four RBI. Bollinger (3-0, 6.00 ERA) picked up the victory, while RailCats starter Stephen Bougher (8-7, 4.80 ERA) took the loss. However, while Bougher suffered the loss, the Goldeyes did score 13 runs against the Gary bullpen in their final three at bats. The Goldeyes and RailCats will meet in the final game of this four-game series – and the final game of the regular season – on Monday at 7 p.m. Morgan Coombs (7-9, 5.37 ERA) will get the start for Gary while Nick Hernandez (12-2, 3.11 ERA) will take to the bump for Winnipeg.
