CHARLOTTE, N. Adidas Nmd r1 Damske .C. -- Al Jefferson and the Charlotte Bobcats cant help but sneak a peek at the Eastern Conference standings every now and again. "I would be great to get in that sixth spot," Jefferson said. The reasoning if obvious: It would help the Bobcats avoid a potential first-round playoff series with Indiana or Miami. For now, the Bobcats are the seventh seed in the East, but theyre gaining ground. Charlotte took a big step on Wednesday night with Jefferson scoring 35 points and Kemba Walker adding a double-double in a 116-111 overtime victory over the Brooklyn Nets. The win pulled the Bobcats within 1/2 games of sixth-seeded Washington, which lost Wednesday night to Phoenix, and three games behind the fifth-seeded Nets. "I think if we continue to win games everything will take care of itself, everything will work out," Jefferson said. "At this point we should be happy and blessed to be in any (playoff) spot." Walker had 20 points and 12 assists, and Chris Douglas-Roberts added 16 points, including two big jump shots in overtime. Deron Williams finished with 29 points for Brooklyn after scoring 18 in the first quarter. Joe Johnson had 18. Josh McRoberts put the Bobcats ahead for good in overtime when he cut to the basket, received a pass from Jefferson and twisted his body in midair for a reverse dunk in traffic, bringing the crowd to its feet. Douglas-Roberts and Johnson traded 3-pointers before Walker hit a 19-footer over Williams to push the lead to 114-111. Shaun Livingston missed a driving layup with 35 seconds left and the Bobcats got the ball. McRoberts was blocked on the ensuing possession, but Douglas-Roberts tracked down the loose ball and made a 20-footer from the left wing to push the lead to five and seal the victory. "I thought the defence was great, but in the end, we come up with a blocked shot, the ball bounces, and you know CDR, he makes a shot with the shot clock winding down and so everybody executed," Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "The ball just bounced their way tonight." Williams tied the game with 26.8 seconds left in regulation when he knocked down a 20-footer from the left wing. The Bobcats had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but the ball slipped out of Walkers hands as time expired. Douglas-Roberts joined the Bobcats in December from the NBA Developmental League and has been a reliable contributor during the teams playoff push. He saw extra minutes off the bench with Gary Neal out with an ankle injury. "Im very confident when Im on the floor and I go in there knowing I have to contribute for this team," Douglas-Roberts said. Williams set a career-high with 57 points in this same building against the Bobcats on March 4, 2012. And early on he looked like he was aiming to better the mark. Despite missing the morning shootaround with an illness, he made seven of his first eight shots, including four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points in the first quarter. The Bobcats, who have surrendered 62 points to Carmelo Anthony and 61 points to LeBron James this season, seemed intent not to allow that to happen again. They shaded their coverage to Williams in the second quarter and he was limited to only two more points before halftime. In the meantime, Jefferson was starting to heat up, scoring 22 points in the first half on 9-of-14 shooting, using a variety of low-post moves and jump hooks. "We gave him some easy ones early," Brooklyns Mason Plumlee said. "... You cant give a great scorer easy buckets early." Brooklyns Jorge Gutierrez was ejected from the game with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter after a flagrant two foul against Cody Zeller. Zeller grabbed an offensive rebound and Gutierrez came down hard with both hands on Zellers shoulders, sending the 7-footer crashing to the hardwood. "I watched the replay and it looked pretty bad -- but that wasnt my intention to do that," Gutierrez said. "Coach always says Nothing easy. Make them earn it on the free throw line. I was just trying to do a hard play." NOTES: The Bobcats are 12-7 since the All-Star break. ... Grammy Award winner Nelly took in the game from a courtside seat. ... The Bobcats and Wells Fargo gave away a new home to former Marine Josh Morgan during the first half of the game as part of the Military Warriors Support Foundation. Morgan was injured in Afghanistan. Tomas Tatar scored twice for Red Wings (2-3-0), Jonathan Ericsson added a goal and Gustav Nyquist had three assists. http://www.botynmdlevne.com/ . The Giants chances of winning the division were dealt a serious blow by the three-game sweep at the hands of the lowly Padres. The Giants open a three-game series at Dodger Stadium on Monday night. San Francisco is still in good shape to clinch a wild-card berth, although it dropped into a tie with Pittsburgh in the race for the top spot.INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis picked a poor time to have a bad game. The Colts missed an opportunity to seize control of the AFC South, show a prime-time TV audience theyre a legitimate title contender and now have to prepare for Peyton Manning and the unbeaten Broncos on a short week. Good luck, right? Chuck Pagano thinks it could be a perfect remedy for Indianapolis ills. "I know it cant come quickly enough for all of us," Pagano said Tuesday when asked about Sundays game. "But weve got to go through the process and prepare, obviously, for this next opponent." Sure, theres plenty to fix between now and the leagues most anticipated game of the season -- Mannings return to Lucas Oil Stadium. And after Monday nights 19-9 loss, the Colts coaches will use every precious moment they have. The cramming session began after an early morning flight back to Indy. Pagano and his staff spent the first part of the day reviewing the tape from their latest stumble in San Diego. It didnt take long to dissect the offence with what Pagano described as only 42 "gradable" plays. They saw four drops including potential scores from Darrius Heyward-Bey and Coby Fleener and a big drop by Reggie Wayne on third down that would have given Indy a key first down. Luck was sacked once, threw a late interception and was under pressure much of the night, and Indy ran only 17 times for 74 yards. Thats not how these Colts (4-2) were built. Yet the biggest problem came on third down. Indy converted only 2 of 10 chances. San Diego (3-3) was 7 of 14. The combination led to a 17-minute disparity in time of possession -- an oddity for a team that came into the weekend with the leagues No. 4 rushing offence. "It was different. It certainly was uncharacteristic of us," Pagano said. "I just think, you can point your finger to a lot of things -- didnt execute well, obviously, third down was an issue on both sides of the ball, which led to the time of possession issue and all those type of things. "Three third downs on defence where you have penalties thhat extend drives by four plays, five plays, nine plays, lead to 10 points, thats shooting yourself in the foot. Basketbalové Boty Adidas. Talked about the dropped passes, which are totally uncharacteristic of our guys. We had opportunities, we had chances." They just couldnt convert. Indy cant afford a repeat this week against Manning and the high-scoring Broncos (6-0). Denver averages 44.2 points per game, a pace that would shatter the NFLs single-season scoring record set by New England during its perfect 2007 regular season (589). One way to combat the Broncos is to steal a page from San Diegos game plan by keeping the ball on the ground and out of Mannings hands. But Indy has to find other solutions and fast. The Colts have been credited with eight drops over the previous two weeks, and the slow starts are becoming a disturbing trend. At San Diego, the Colts settled for field goals on the first and last drives of the first half. The previous week against Seattle, they fell into a 12-0 deficit after opening the game with three straight three-and-outs. Give Manning an opening like that, and its game over as players such as Wayne know all too well. But the Colts have been one of the leagues most resilient teams since Paganos arrival. They went from 2-14 in 2011, when Manning missed the season with a nerve injury, to 11-5 under Luck last season -- tied for the second-greatest one-season improvement in league history. They did that as Pagano spent most of the season battling cancer. Indy still has not lost two straight under Pagano, a streak they kept intact by winning at defending NFC champion San Francisco in Week 3, and they have won nine of their past 10 home games. Theyve just never had to rebound on a short week. "Again, Sunday cant come quick enough," Pagano said. "You play a West Coast game on Monday night, you deal with it as things come. Well put a plan together and get these guys back, get some guys back hopefully and get them healthy and recharged and all those type of things and, hopefully, get ready to play a good ball game on Sunday night."
