Mulder won 103 games over nine major league seasons with Oakland and St. Louis, including a 21-win season in 2001. Mulder worked as a television analyst before retooling his delivery and beginning a comeback attempt late last year. He agreed to a deal two weeks ago with the Angels, hoping for a shot to earn a spot on their pitching staff in spring training. It has been a strong start to the season for Steve Lavins Red Storm. After ending Syracuses 55-game homecourt winning streak on Dec. 6, St. Johns made light work of Fairleigh Dickinson (74-52) to move to 7-1 on the year. The only blemish on the teams record is a 73-66 setback to top-10 foe Gonzaga, but the Red Storm come into this contest with a three-game win streak in tow. Tom Pecoras Rams have struggled out of the gate and currently sit one game under .500 at 3-4. However, Fordham has played better of late, entering off back-to-back wins over Siena (69-67) and most recently, Monmouth (68-58 OT). These two teams are very familiar with one another, as this represents the 86th matchup between them and the sixth straight season they have met. St. Johns holds a 64-21 series advantage. St. Johns recorded a 46-point romp over Fordham in last years MSG Holiday Festival (104-58), the largest margin of victory in the 105-year history of the series. The Rams had their chance to win in regulation against Monmouth, but missed some free throws down the stretch, setting up an extra session. However, Fordham took control in overtime and posted the 10-point win. Freshman Chris Sengfelder recorded his first career double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for Fordham. Junior Mandall Thomas and freshman Eric Paschall were instrumental in the victory as well, posting 15 points apiece. Offensivve proficiency hasnt exactly been a strength for Fordham this season, as the team is netting a modest 65. Custom Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys. 1 ppg on a poor .389 shooting overall. The team also suffers from a -2.0 turnover margin, but has been solid on the boards, with a +6.1 rebounding edge. Despite his youth, Paschall is the go-to- guy at the offensive end, averaging 18.8 ppg on a solid .494 shooting. Thomas (13.1 ppg) and Sengfelder (10.7 ppg) are key contributors offensively as well. Junior forward Ryan Rhoomes provides a presence up front with 8.7 points and a team-best 11.6 rebounds per contest. St. Johns is a dangerous team with the ability to win games at either end of the floor. The Red Storm are averaging 73.2 ppg on .445 shooting, while holding foes to just 61.5 ppg and well below 40-percent shooting (.366), including a mere .295 from behind the arc. Four players are currently averaging double figures in scoring, giving the Red Storm a balanced attack. DAngelo Harrison leads the charge in the backcourt, averaging 19.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing. Fellow guards Rysheed Jordan (14.4 ppg) and Phil Greene IV (12.3 ppg) provide perimeter depth, while SirDominic Pointer (12.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and Chris Obekpa (7.1 ppg, 9.9 rpg. 4.1 bpg) are enjoying strong seasons up front. Harrison poured in a game-high 26 points, Greene added 16, Pointer 12 and Obekpa dominated in the low post with 11 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, as St. Johns made light work of Fairleigh Dickinson last time out. The Red Storm shot a sizzling .569 from the floor overall, while limiting the Knights to just .373 efficiency. ' ' '

The CFL and the CFL Players Association has just concluded two days of negotiations on the new CBA, former NFL receiver Chad Johnson is getting a look at Montreals spring camp, and the careers of a couple of big-name players are still up in the air. Vapormax Plus Sunset For Sale . We are just under 80 days from kicking off the regular season in the CFL and these are just three of a handful of football stories that have been circulating around the country. So, just so sports fans can take a little break from the what the heck happened to my hockey team talk, lets take a look at some of the football topics that have managed to wedge their way into the odd sportscast. Lets start in Montreal, where Alouettes GM Jim Popp is taking a look at former NFL Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson at the teams spring camp in Vero Beach, Florida. Johnson hasnt played since 2011, and is 36 years old, but he does have an impressive resume; six times voted to the Pro Bowl after racking up over 11,000 yards and scoring 67 touchdowns in 11 seasons in the NFL. Wally Buono and the Lions passed on him but Jim Popp wants to take a longer look, and on the surface, there really is nothing lost by the Als inviting him to a workout at their spring camp. Popp says Johnson wants to play football again, adding "he wants to play, he wasnt ready to stop and didnt like the way his career ended in the NFL, and this is not about money." The Als GM also said that the workout in Florida is basically around 25 per cent of the process. Obviously, he wants to evaluate where Johnson is at physically, but that is just one question that needs to be answered. The others include: Where is he mentally? Can he help the Als with what will be a new offensive system? There are work visas to be considered as well. Chad Johnson can obviously play the game, and according to Popp, who has seen video of the former Bengal working out, thinks he is still in great shape. However, a contract offer to Montreals main camp has not even been discussed and there are lots of questions to be answered before that occurs. The biggest question is really not whether Johnson can still run or whether he can still catch, he proved he could still do those things in his first workout, it is whether he is willing to completely commit to continuing his football career. We have seen it too many times, in fact it was happening back in the 80s and 90s as well. A former NFL starter thinks they can cruise into a CFL camp, show everyone how it is done, and play for fun for six months, only to find out quickly, that whether youre making $1 million or $100,000, the game of football requires an all-in philosophy. When Ricky Williams signed in Toronto, while serving a suspension in the NFL in 2006, there were some reports and speculation that Williams would dominate in the CFL, and rush for, well some even said, 3,000 yards without trying. Williams totals in 11 games with the Argos were 109 carries for 526 yards and two touchdowns, which is hardly tearing it up. Before some start making excuses for that lack of production, like its a different game, and he didnt get as much opportunity, simply look at his average: it was 4.8 yards/carry. Williams went back to the NFL in 2007 and, in 2009, rushed for over 1,000 yards in Miami, and has rushed for over 10,000 yards in the NFL. The point being, like Williams, Chad Johnson has been a good football player, but he can only help Montreal if he is willing to be all-in, and approach the CFL in a respectful and professional way. Its never wrong to take a look, but even Popp admitted that he is looking at much more than just whether or not he can still run routes, and catch the ball. CBA Talk Last week in Calgary, the CFL and the CFLPA met to begin discussions on a new CBA. Both sides are being careful not to leak any information as to how the meetings went. Its safe to say that both sides believe that the players should be making more money, but how they get there and how much more money is going to make these negotiations challenging for both sides. For example, the players making more money isnt as simple as the owners writing a bigger check, and allowing the teams GMs to spend that money where they please. If the players do get a much bigger piece of the financial pie the question is where should that money be spent? Should starting quarterbacks get a raise due to the degree of difficulty with the position? Should the entire roster get an across the board bump? Or would it be better for the league to raise the minimum wage, and how would the league even regulate that, when each owner and or GM will run their own teams the way they want? The term revenue sharing has come up and apparently is going to be an issue that is on top of the agenda, but again - it isnt as simple as saying lets split revenues down the middle between the clubs and the players. The players will cite the fact that a new and lucrative TV contract has changed the financial landscape of the league, and they want, as the new head of the Players Association Scott Flory has said, "their fair share." On the surface that sounds reasonable, and again everyone believes that the players should be paid more. However, the new TV deal starts this year, and no club can honestly say right now what the revenues will look like at the end of this season and beyond. In fact, it makes you wonder if revenue sharing at this point is even a good idea for the Players when they dont know what, if any the revenues will be. All of which makes all of these negotiations clear as mud, but the bottom line is both sides know the players should get paid more, and it is safe to say, that in the end, that will happen. Under The Radar Now on to a couple of big-name players that are managing to stay well under the radar and whose futures are still very much up in the air. The first is quarterback Kevin Glenn, who has both publicly and privately, asked to be traded from Ottawa, and who did not attend the teams spring camp in the United States. Glenn, who led the Stamps to the West Final and a Grey Cup over the last two seasons, is an interesting one for a couple of reasons. First, despite getting the majority of the snaps in Calgary, Glenn was the back-up to Drew Tate, and in fact last year as the team entered the playoffs, there was all kinds of debate and discussion by the teams fan base over whether or not it should be Glenn, or third string QB Bo Levi Mitchell to start in the playoffs. So he is still a back-up QB to most, yet Glenn has shown he has the skills to lead a team to the championship game. Its tough for management on any team to put a real value on what exactly they are getting when they talk trades for Kevin Glenn. Secondly, Glenn has chosen not to talk publicly, except to say that he wants out of Ottawa. Now you have to believe that he and his agent are trying to get the message out, behind closed doors, to any team that will listen that if acquired, Glenn will be a good teammate like he has been in his career to date. However, it will not be a newsflash to teams that Glenns agent is selling him as a team-first guy. One does have to wonder if those same teams are concerned that Glenn will only go to a camp if he is guaranteed the starting job, based on what he has said so far in public. Thats another reason why it will be tough on teams trying to assess what they would be willing to give up for Glenns services and what that might mean to their current rosters. The second player that has been under the radar of late has been free agent Keron Williams. Last year in BC, Williams was asked to move from rush end to defensive tackle and saw his sack totals go from 12 in 2012 to just four last year. Williams did not complain in the media about the move, and only he and the Lions coaching staff know if he said anything behind closed doors. Now whether he complained about it or not, the fact of the matter is, it is very difficult to move from the left to the right side of the formation, let alone move to a different position all together. Williams has been asked to do this twice by the Lions. As a member of the Als in 2008 and 2009, he played on the interior of the defensive line and dominated, accumulating a total of 18 sacks in two years. When he packed his bags and moved to BC, then head coach Wally Buono asked him to move to defensive end, a position that requires a completely different skill set, and in fact a different body type. Williams took a year to get used to his new position, which is completely understandable when you consider most players could not even do it. In his first year playing off the edge in 2010, Williams registered five sacks, but in the back half of the season, you could see he was going to be a force. In his last two full years as a rush end, he was arguably the premier pass rusher in the league and recorded a total of 23 sacks. Now Williams, who is just 29 years old, is likely waiting to see what happens to the salary cap as the CBA negotiations continue. It also goes without saying that most, if not all, the teams in the league have shown some level of interest in the free agent, and yet it has been all quiet on the Williams front. All of which leads to speculation that he is either going to wait and see if there is an NFL tryout possibility for as long as possible or stay in BC and he and the Lions have already come to some agreement. The only other scenario is that he is still testing the free agent market in the CFL. However, if thats the case, why wouldnt he and his agent want to, say, leak out the level of interest to create a bidding war for his services? Williams could not be reached for comment. The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on Wednesday that starting quarterback and Grey Cup champion Darian Durant has agreed to a contract extension with the club, which is ahead of schedule. Durant said recently that he didnt think that the deal would get done until just before training camp, but clearly the Riders made their franchise player, "an offer he just couldnt refuse". Terms of the deal have not been released but, with what he has now accomplished and a playoff run last year that was as close to perfect as any quarterback has had in recent memory, Durant may not be the highest paid QB in the league, but it is not a stretch to think he will be close. It is a well-deserved extension. And finally, according to CTV reporter Heath Brown who was in attendance at a fan forum event in Calgary recently, Stampeders head coach John Hufnagel addressed the crowd and mentioned the organization has come to a "handshake agreement" with their star running back Jon Cornish on a contract extension. Cornish had as good as season as any player in the history of the game in 2013, a season where he was named the leagues Most Outstanding Player and the Most Outstanding Canadian. He also received the Lou Marsh Memorial Trophy as Canadas top athlete, and most recently was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the Calgary Booster Club. Apparently, when asked after the event to further discuss the Cornish extension, Hufnagel refused to go there, which may have meant the coach regretted letting the big news slip out. However, whether he meant to or not, the news is huge for Stamps fans, as they will be able to continue to cheer for the most dominant running back in the CFL over the last two seasons. Okay, now back to the what happened to my NHL team discussions. Vapormax Flyknit 3 Black And White . The move is retroactive to Aug. 1. Madrid plays city rival Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, when a victory in Lisbon would provide the Spanish giant with its record 10th European Cup -- or "La Decima" as it is known in Spanish. Its been a long wait since Zinedine Zidane scored one of footballs iconic goals to lead Madrid to its ninth title, such that even Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti noted upon his arrival in the Spanish capital: "You could taste the desire to win La Decima in the air." "I remember that after we won the ninth (European Cup) that the next day we were already being asked about the 10th," said Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who is the only player on the team to have played in the Glasgow final, a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. Madrid was doing its best to avoid terming its infatuation with perhaps the most important trophy in club football an obsessive affair, despite the very make-up of the club being shaped by it. "Its not an obsession, its a great motivation," Ancelotti said on Tuesday. "We have a great opportunity to get into the history books of this club. Its not an obsession but an opportunity." Madrids recent record in Europes top competition has only bred further impatience to increase its record trophy tally, which led FIFA to bestow it with the title of top club of the 20th century. Madrid won the European Cup six times between 1955 and 66, including a record five consecutive titles. Vapormax All White Cheap. It took 32 years to win the seventh in 1998, which not only provided liberation but led to returned success in the competition. But following the ninth cup win in 2002, Madrid went seven straight seasons without advancing from the first knockout stage despite president Florentino Perezs enormous spending on the likes of Brazil striker Ronaldo, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. The arrival of coach Jose Mourinho in 2010/11 reversed that trend with Madrid reaching the semifinals for three straight years. But never the final, until now. "In the last couple of years weve played well in this competition and we are always just one step away, so I think our fans deserve to experience this, reaching a final after 12 years," said Madrid defender Sergio Ramos. "To feel pressure would be a problem. You have to go out convinced that you can win it." Normally teams only produce T-shirts to commemorate final triumphs. Not Madrid, which felt such a release following the semifinal victory against Bayern that it had one ready for the players at the whistle reading "Now for the 10th!" Now, a first final between clubs from the same city stands in the way as Atletico comes off winning its first Spanish league for 18 years with an opportunity to win its first European Cup 40 years on from its lone appearance in a final. "La Decima is the trophy all Madridistas want," Cristiano Ronaldo said in reference to Madrid supporters. ' ' '
BERLIN -- Freiburg defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 and Borussia Dortmund was held to 2-2 at home by Augsburg as Bayern Munichs main title rivals both faltered in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Carlos Beltran Jersey . Bayern led second-place Leverkusen by 10 points with a game in hand, while Dortmund was another four points off the pace. Freiburg midfielder Felix Klaus scored in the last minute as his side twice came from behind to climb provisionally out of the relegation zone. "We still have an incredibly long way to go," Freiburg coach Christian Streich said. Lars Bender scored with Leverkusens first shot in the fourth minute and Admir Mehmedi equalized with a fine strike in the 27th before Simon Rolfes restored the visitors lead eight minutes later. Jonathan Schmids free kick squeezed inside the near post in the 53rd, thanks to a light deflection from Leverkusen striker Stefan Kiessling on his 30th birthday, and Klaus scored the winning goal on a counterattack. "Freiburg were dangerous," Leverkusen coach Sami Hyypia said. "We tried to win, then came the counter." Dortmund endured an afternoon to forget as the sides bad luck with injuries continued. Poland midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski sustained suspected cruciate ligament damage to his right knee in the third minute. "The opening period was overshadowed by Blaszczykowskis injury," said Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp, who has also had to contend with long-standing injuries to Ilkay Gundogan, Mats Hummels, Lukasz Piszczek and Neven Subotic. Sven Bender headed home side Dortmund in front in the fifth -- one minute after his twin opened the scoring for Leverkusen -- but conceded an own goal in the 56th, when he deflected Andre Hahns cross into his own net. Nuri Sahin restored Dortmunds lead from a free kick in the 66th, only for South Korea midfielder Ji Dong-won, who will join Dortmund next season, to score Augsburgs equalizer in the 72nd just two minutes after going on as a substitute. "You could see wed set our sights high," Klopp said. "But you could also see that that can lead to tension." Elsewhere, Nuremberg defeated Hoffenheim 4-0 for its first win of the season, Hannover won 3-1 at Wolfsburg for its first away win, and Mainz earned a 2-1 win at Stuttgart. Alexander Meiers 36th-minute strike against the run of play was enough for Eintracht Frankfurt to defeat Hertha Berlin 1-0 in the late game. The visitors might have had a penalty with some 20 minutes remaining, when Carlos Zambrano appeared to catch Ronny in the face with his elbow. The referee didnt see it, however, and booked the Hertha midfielder for protesting. Nuremberg coach Gertjan Verbeek had vowed not to shave until his side finally won in the league. "Im very happy with the win, also that the beard is shaved," the Dutchman said. "It was important for us to take the lead." United States international Timmy Chandler opened the scoring with a deflected shot in the 24th, before two goals from Josip Drmic and another from Daniel Ginczek gave Nuremberg its first Bundesliga victory at the 18th attempt this season. Belgian midfielder Kevin de Bruyne made his debut for Wolfsburg following his switch from Chelsea for a reported 22 million euros ($30 million). MILWAUKEE -- Free agent Jerryd Bayless signed with the Milwaukee Bucks in large part because of Jason Kidd. The 6-foot-3 guard played for Memphis and Boston last season, averaging 9.3 points in 72 games. Now he gets a chance to play for Jason Kidd, who left the Brooklyn Nets this summer to coach the Bucks. "The thing that was most intriguing was Kidd," Bayless said Thursday at the Bucks training facility. "He can help me in a variety of different ways. Adam Hadwin continued his great play this season by notching his second victory of the year on the Web. Kevin King Super Bowl Jersey .Com Tour with a two-shot win at the Chiquita Classic, one of four events on the circuits season-ending Finals. The victory earned the B.C. golfer $180,000 (U.S.) pushing his season winnings to just shy of $500,000. “It was just an awesome week,” Hadwin said moments after hoisting the trophy. “I just felt in control all week. I stayed aggressive and made some putts.” Hadwin, 26, has already locked up a spot on next years PGA Tour by virtue of finishing fourth on the tours regular season money list, but there is still more to play for. The win pushed him to second on the money list and one out of the coveted No. 1 spot of the projected priority standings for the Finals – the combination of money from the regular season and the four-tournament Finals. If he were to finish there, hed earn a full exemption on the PGA Tour next year – meaning hed avoid any reshuffles – as well as a spot in the field at The Players. “At the start of the Finals, it certainly wasnt something I was thinking about,” said Hadwin of the possibility of finishing first. “But this puts me in good position now. “Still, Im going to go into next week and try not to focus on that. Im going to do the same thing I did this week and just give myself some chances for birdies.” Hadwin came into the Finals without too much pressure, knowing he was going to the PGA Tour next season regardless of how he played. That freed him up to play some relaxed golf. “I had a good priority ranking already,” he said. “I was really just out there enjoying myself. And you wonder what comes first? Do you play well because youre having fun or are you having fun because youre playing well?” Hadwin had just five bogeys over the four rounds and equaled his best score on the Web.Com tour with a 63 on Thursday. That round included a personal-best six consecutive birdies. “That was just an unbelievable start,” Hadwin reflected. “I made everything I looked at, just went crazy.” On Sunday, Hadwin birdied the first two holes, added another at the sixth before a bogey on the eighth. Back-nine birdies on 11 and 16 pushed him to 18 under par and he finished the day with two pars to earn the victory. He admitted that there were some nerves on the day as he battled for his second victory. But he was happy to keep them in check as he came to the final holes. “I knew the nerves were coming,” he stated. “Its just part of it but I really felt comfortable out there and in control. I was really proud of how I handled the nerves. I never hit a nervous shot.” Its been a sensational year for Hadwin, who is finishing his third full season on the Web.Com Tour. He jumped out of the gate and has never been out of the top 10 on the money list. He had no idea of how he was planning to celebrate the latest victory. He was headed to Louisville for a team fund raiser for his alma matter on Monday and then off to Columbus for the third leg of the Finals. That time, however, is not now and with apologies to the "Its Early" crowd, with whom we typically should all agree hardly removed from opening day, this three-game home set with the Houston Astros is important to the Blue Jays. Nobody is suggesting that, say, if Toronto gets swept its season is over. But a check of the math tells you it doesnt help. The Blue Jays, by virtue of their perch in the American League East, have the unenviable task of playing 76 of their 162 games against their four divisional opponents. They get the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles 19 times each, a veritable meat grinder that can chew up and spit out the hope for a successful season all by itself. Lets say, for the sake of argument, the Blue Jays go 38-38 against their own division. That leaves 86 games against non-divisional opponents. To get to 90 wins, which likely wont be enough to win the division and may or may not be enough to capture one of the two wild card spots, Toronto would have to go 52-34. So far, after splitting a four-game series in Tampa Bay and disappointingly dropping two of three at home to the Yankees, the Jays are 3-4 within the AL East. Houston marks the first non-divisional opponent and due to the make up of the schedule, this is the only time the Astros will visit Toronto all year. It doesnt matter whether its April, June, or the intensity filled months of August and September, Houstons only here once and when they visit the Jays need to make hay. More than anything, manager John Gibbons wants his club to better protect home soil. "Ive always said you cant bury yourself early," said Gibbons. "Especially in this division, its an uphill battle and its real tough to come back. Were trying to get off to a good start and with more games at home itd be nice to finish up good at home. Youve got to play good at home, its no secret. Hold your own on the road and play good baseball at home." JEKYLL AND HYDE ROTATION The biggest question facing the Blue Jays (3-4) heading into the season centred on the starting rotation. Could it hold up in the toughest division in baseball? April 1: Drew Hutchison, 5.1 innings pitched.April 2: Mark Buehrle, 8.2 IP.April 5: R.A. Dickey, 6.2 IP. In the four losses, the starts have allowed a staggering 20 earned runs in just 16 innings pitched (11.25 ERA, averaging four innings pitched per start): March 31: R.A. Dickey, 6 earned runs in 5 innings pitched.April 3: Brandon Morrow, 4 ER in 5 IP.April 4: Dustin McGowan, 4 ER in 2.2 IP.April 6: Drew Hutchison, 6 ER in 3.1 IP. ROTATION JUGGLING Mondays off day has afforded manager John Gibbons the opportunity to flip R.A. Dickey and Dustin McGowan, meaning Dickey will start Thursdays series finale against the Astros and McGowan will open a three-game set in Baltimore on Friday night. "Thatll split up Morrow and McGowan," said Gibbons. "The two guys were watching a little bit. Put Dickey in the middle and he can eat some innings, anyway." Dickey has repeatedly said he prefers pitching under a roof, although Gibbons denied the forecasted cool conditions outdoors in Baltimore factored in to the decision. REYES UPDATE Jose Reyes, eligible to come off the disabled list from a strained left hamstring on April 16, ran the treadmill and took ground balls during batting practice on Tuesday afternoon. "Ill know better when I start running and see how Im feeling," said Reyes. "For now, Ill just take it day by day and see what happens." Reyes has been hitting to maintain his batting stroke but still has yet to run at full speed. When Reyes is ready to play, he expects to appear in at least a couple of minor league rehab games before returning to the Blue Jays. JANSSEN UPDATE Casey Janssen, out with an abdominal/back strain, doesnt think hell be ready to come off the disabled list when hes eligible on Sunday. "Probably not," said Janssen. "I dont know the exact date but Ive got to get on a rehab somewhere; hopefully shortly thereafter." Janssen expects only to need one or two minor league rehab games before hes back with the Blue Jays. If he continues to progress, its not unreasonable to expect Janssen to return mid-to-late next week. ' ' '
Two prospects from the U. Tim McCarver .S. Ski Team were killed in an avalanche Monday while skiing near their European training base in the Austrian Alps. The team said Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle, 19, died in the incident near the Rettenbach glacier in the mountains over Soelden, the venue for the annual season-opening World Cup races.Berlack, from Franconia, New Hampshire, and Astle, from Sandy, Utah, were part of a group of six skiers who were descending from the 3,056-meter Gaislachkogel when they left the prepared slope and apparently set off the avalanche. The other four skied out of the slide and escaped unhurt.Officials in the Tyrolean region said an avalanche alert had been declared for the area after days of heavy snowfall and mild temperatures.Ronnie and Bryce were both outstanding ski racers who were passionate about their sport — both on the race course and skiing the mountain, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President and CEO Tiger Shaw said. Our hearts go out to the Berlack and Astle families, as well as to their extended sport family. Both of them loved what they did and conveyed that to those around them. The tragedy has left the U.S. Ski Team in shock, Alpine director Patrick Riml told The Associated Press in Croatia, Zagreb, where the American slalom team was preparing for a World Cup race on Tuesday.Head coach Sascha Rearick left Zagreb shortly after being informed and travelled back to Austria to be with the so-called development team Berlack and Astle were part of.Riml said the athletes were free to decide whether they still wanted to compete in Tuesdays night race, adding the team planned to wear mourning bands. We are all very close, said Riml, an Austrian who was born and grew up in Soelden. We train a lot in Park City. Well see how they handle the whole thing and how they react.Riml added its a shock for everybody. Two great boys, great athletes, good skiers. They were fun to have around. We are all in shock, still. Its very tragic.Berlack and Astle were part of a group of 10 skiers on the development team who gained experience in the Europa Cup and were preparing to race on the top-level World Cup.They all have the potential (to be on the World Cup), Riml said. These two boys were among the other eight boys who are our future. We believed in these guys, thats why we selected them.Berlack was a member of the Franconia Ski Club who recently trained at Vermonts Burke Mountain Academy. He had earned a spot on the development team in 2013 and finished 11th in downhill and 17th in super-G at the National championships that year in Squaw Valley.Berlack grew up in Franconia, the small town in the White Mountains that also produced U.S., world and Olympic champion Bode Miller. Rich Smith, program director at the Franconia Ski Club, said he had known Berlack since he was 7.Theres not enough words to say what a great guy Ronnie Berlack was and always will be, Smith said.In a statement, Burke Mountain Academy said it was devastated by Berlacks death. His father, Steve Berlack, is a coach at the academy. His mother, Cindy, is also a ski coach.Only last week Ronnie was here at BMA training with us, the school said. Ronnie was someone we all loved and deeply respected. He had a huge spirit. There is no one who better represents our core values than Ronnie. Our hearts go out to his parents Steve and Cindy, and his sister Carolyn. At the Dec. 5 World Cup downhill in Beaver Creek, Berlack was one of the five forerunners, who test a course before the actual race starts. Berlack was also set to be a forerunner during the world championships on the same course next month, U.S ski team spokeswoman Megan Harrod told the AP.Astle was invited to train with the development team this season after strong early season results, including two top-10 results at NorAm Cup races last month in Canada. He was hoping ... to be in the next Olympics, that was his goal, his mother Laura Astle said, and he was pretty much on his way.___Associated Press reporters Lindsay Whitehurst in Salt Lake City and Rik Stevens in Concord, New Hampshire, contributed to this report. Two thrilling trips down Mammoth Mountain later in the afternoon all but solved that problem. Oh, and they sent a message too. The sports greatest ever is still on top of his game. In fact, hes building on it. Soaring through the California air looking very much like someone intent on making history, White dominated the afternoon session, posting a score of 98.6 to move closer to one of the four spots on the U.S. Olympic halfpipe team. Even better, he did it while landing the latest wrinkle in his ever-expanding repertoire. White nailed a frontside double-cork 1440 in competition for the first time during his second run, a trick he spent the run-up to Sochi obsessing over. The payoff came in the middle of his run as he packed four full twists and two flips inside in one physics-defying leap. Not bad considering a needed win was already assured. White posted a 97 during his first run, which included his usual double McTwist 1260. The new skill adds half a rotation, which he says changes it completely. Maybe, but the results havent changed a bit. White pumped his fists when his score was posted in a mixture of relief and joy. "I was treating it like an Olympic event, which it is," White said. "I wanted to up my score. I wanted to do something under pressure ... Im happy I landed it." It also avoided any second-guessing after White decided to skip the morning event after a busy Thursday in which he wiped out during a slopestyle qualifying event to return to the top of the hill hours later and win, securing a berth on the U.S. Olympic slopestyle team in the process. "I just figured if I could pull it out yesterday I should be able to do it today and that inspired me to get up and make it happen," White said. "Taking the morning off was the best call I think Ive made." LLooked like it. Michael Wacha. Scotty Lago, who won bronze behind White in Vancouver in 2010, thrust himself back into the mix for Sochi by finishing second. Taylor Gold wrapped up his seat in Sochi by finishing third. The U.S. is so stacked in the halfpipe making the Olympic team could be even more difficult than reaching the podium in Russia. Yet White left little doubt the chasm hes created between himself and the rest of the world hasnt moved much in the last four years. "I was really on the edge of my physical abilities," White said. "I was so fatigued from slopestyle. But I did a run that Ive never ever in my career done, so Im happy. Ive got to push through all the way to Sochi. Ive just got to keep going." The field behind Gold, White and Greg Bretz is a jumbled mess, with a half-dozen jockeying for the one spot that remains up for grabs. Its a field that now includes enigmatic Danny Davis after Davis pulled out a stunning win during the morning session. The 25-year-old was considered the snowboarder with the best shot at challenging White in Vancouver. Davis even beat White in a qualifying event barely a month before the games only to have his pelvis crushed in an all-terrain vehicle accident. Hes spent most of the last quadrennial trying to stay healthy. During a dynamic run, he looked more than healthy. He looked competitive. His 95.20 was enough to edge Gold by 1.2 points and give Davis hope of joining White in Sochi. "Ive had a rough four years of getting hurt and this year was about getting good at snowboarding again," Davis said. "If I make the Olympic team, its cool because its another accomplishment in my life Ive yet to make." Kelly Clark, who took gold in Salt Lake City in 2002, remained perfect by sweeping both womens events on Friday. The two-time Olympic medallist is guaranteed a spot on the team. The other three spots are a toss-up, though 2006 Olympic champion and 2010 silver medallist Hannah Teter bolstered her bid by finishing third and now has two straight top-four finishes. ' ' '

Manitobas Jeff Stoughton won 9-5 in nine ends after scoring two in the first and stealing two in the second on a missed Quebec runback at the Tim Hortons Brier. He stole another in the third on a gentle Quebec hit that overcurled and two more in the fourth on Jean-Michel Menards tap-back attempt that barely brushed Manitobas stones. It put Manitoba up 7-0 going into five. Menard drew for one finally in five and raised his arm in a good-natured salute to the applause of the half-filled arena. He let alternate Pierre Charette skip eight and he stole two to keep the game going when Stoughton missed a hit for one. Manitoba also put alternate Garth Smith in at lead. Neither skip was up for the game and both suggested it shouldnt even be part of the Brier. "I was personally totally mentally exhausted," said Menard. "Playing two back-to-back games, having only five hours sleep because of the time change . . .We werent really focused, expecially me, and it cost us early in a few ends." Stoughton minimized the win andd said they werent really focused either. Taylor Decker Jersey Retro. "We got lucky in the first end. If he makes his shot they probably steal two and they win the game," he said. "Its a disappointing game to play because youre not going to win the Brier. Its a game that Quebec and Manitoba didnt want to play. Its not a game that anyone wants to play." Menard agreed. "Ill try to be nice, but this game shouldnt exist, its useless," he said. Stoughton said the winner of the 3-4 playoff game should decide the bronze medal. That would have seen Quebec take it, since they beat Manitoba to qualify for the semifinal. Menards five-game winning streak overcame his weak 3-4 start at the Brier to get him into fourth spot and the playoffs. He then defeated Stoughton 7-6 Saturday as missed shots allowed Quebec to steal two for a three-point lead in their playoff game. But he lost 9-8 in the semifinal later Saturday to Alberta and Kevin Koe, who plays John Morris and British Columbia Sunday evening for the championship. Stoughton finished in a three-way tie for the lead at the Brier at 9-2 but the way the tiebreaking formula was applied and pushed him out of the 1-2 playoff game, which B.C. took over Alberta. ' ' '
KANSAS CITY, Mo. Brynden Trawick Jersey . -- Alex Gordon hit a three-run homer and matched a career high with four RBIs, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 7-3 rout of the Tampa Bay Rays in their series finale Wednesday. Nori Aoki, Johnny Giavotella and Billy Butler also drove in runs for the Royals, who have struggled to find offence all season. They had only scored more than four runs once in their first seven games, and lost 1-0 to Tampa Bay the previous night. Jeremy Guthrie (2-0) recovered from a sloppy start to hold the Rays to four hits over seven innings. The only run he allowed came on Desmond Jennings homer in the fourth. The Royals broke the game open with a five-run fifth off Jake Odorizzi (1-1), who was part of the blockbuster trade in 2012 that brought James Shields from Tampa Bay to Kansas City. The Royals went ahead on Butlers RBI groundout and Gordons run-scoring single in the fourth inning. Lorenzo Cain singled off Odorizzi to lead off the fifth, Aoki followed two batters later with a triple to right, and the flood gates were open. Giavotella, recalled from Triple-A Omaha to replace injured second baseman Omar Infante, hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. Hosmer and Butler followed with back-to-back singles, and Gordon popped a pitch to right-centre that hung up long enough in the wind to land over the fence. It was a rough way for Odorizzi to return to Kauffman Stadium, where he made his big league debut with the Royals in 2012. He allowed all seven runs on 10 hits and a walk in five innings. The Royals squandered a scoring chance with runners on first and second and one out in the second inning when Mike Moustakas struck out and Gordon was thrown out heading to third. Royals manager Ned Yost trundled onto the field and challenged the call. After a review of 2 minutes, 10 seconds, the ruling made by third base umpire Quinn Wolcott was upheld. It hardly mattered the way the Royals were swinging -- and the way Guthrie was pitching. The right-hander, who turned 35 on Tuesday, was coming off a rough start against the White Sox. But Guthrie navigated trouble in each of the first three innings, leaving five Rays on base, and then retired his final 12 batters to hand the lead to his bullpen. HOUSTON -- After scoring six runs in the last four games, Houstons offence went on a homer spree. Vapormax Flyknit Pure Platinum . Chris Carter, Jason Castro, Marc Krauss and Matt Dominguez each hit a home run as the Houston Astros snapped a five-game skid with a 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday night. Carter hit a monstrous three-run shot to centre field in the third to give the Astros a lead, and Castro and Krauss went back-to-back in the sixth, with Castros homer a two-run shot. Krauss homer found the upper deck in right field and chased As starter Jesse Chavez (8-7). Two batters later, Dominguez sent a drive onto the railroad tracks in left field off reliever Dan Otero. "Weve been going through our offensive woes and, again, to see the middle of the lineup swing the bat the way they swung it tonight was exciting," Houston manager Bo Porter said. The last time Houston hit three home runs in an inning was June 5, 2013, against Baltimore. The Astros were coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Miami. "Its just nice to see that after we struggled against the Marlins to score runs," Carter said. "Its nice to see the offence come around like that." Houston starter Brett Oberholtzer (3-7) won for the first time since May 30, giving up three runs and eight hits with two strikeouts in 6 2-3 innings. "For me and Castro, it was the same game plan," Oberholtzer said. "Just attack them, throw the ball in and stay away from the big innings." Chavez allowed a season-high six runs and five hits with five strikeouts in 5 1-3 innings. "I thought he was throwing the ball really well, real similar to how he did last time out," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "I think the Carter at-bat affected the way things went from there." The three home runs allowed were a career high. Chavez had allowed three home runs in his last 11 starts combined. "To sum up the whole day, it was three pitches and one walk," Chavez said. "That cant happen when you have the lead, and its something that has been my Achilles heel, giving back the runs they get for me and not being able to get through six." Stephen Vogt had two hits, including a solo home run in the third into the upper deck in right to give the As a 2-0 lead. Jed Lowrie and Josh Donaldson each added two hits for Oakland. Then the Giants bats came alive, Arizonas bullpen wilted, and San Francisco rallied from four runs down to beat the Diamondbacks 9-8 on Buster Poseys two-run home run off new closer Addison Reed in the ninth inning. "I think we want to be a team that keeps grinding and keeps pushing," Posey said. "It was nice to be able to do that tonight right out of the chute to give us that confidence that when we get down we know we have the ability to come back." Poseys star turn didnt surprise Giants starter Madison Bumgarner, who left after giving up four unearned runs in four innings. "Hes on a different level, man," Bumgarner said. "Hes so good and hes been that good since day one. Its fun to watch him play every day." Posey had no experience against Reed, who came to the Diamondbacks in an off-season trade from the Chicago White Sox. "Ive never faced him before, spring training or anything," Posey said. "I was really just trying to get a pitch I can handle." He got it on a fastball that he sent over the left field wall. "For us to come back and win a game like that, it just shows you, you go hard for nine innings ," Bochy said. "These guys did and got some big hits later in the game. It seemed like it got contagious, then Buster came through for us in a big way. It was the season opener for San Francisco and the first true home game for the Diamondbacks, who started the season with two losses as the home team against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Australia. Miguel Montero, who had three hits and reached base five times, homered to lead off the Arizona ninth and make it a one-run game. Brandon Belt had three hits, including a solo home run, and singled ahead of Poseys homer. Arizona scored four unearned runs off Bumgarner in the fourth and led 7-3 after six. San Francisco got four runs with two outs in the seventh, with reliever Brad Ziegler walking in the tying run. Jean Machi (1-0) pitched 1 2-3 innings of relief to get the victory. Vapormax Plus Light Menta. . Reed (0-1), acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the off-season, got the loss. Sergio Romo, who gave up the home run to Montero, earned the save. After Monteros shot to left, Chris Owings reached on a bunt single and was sacrificed to second by Gerardo Parra. Pinch-hitter Eric Chavez struck out and A.J. Pollock, who has started the season 0 for 13, popped out to end it. Pollock was 0 for 6 with four strikeouts. In the Giants big seventh, pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza doubled in a run, ending Arizona starter Brandon McCarthys night. McCarthy was livid about home plate umpire Tom Hallions call of a ball on a 2-2 pitch just before the double. "There was a call in the seventh that changed the entire outlook of the game," McCarthy said. "We all have to execute after that point but ... it kind of leaves a bitter taste." Oliver Perez came in and gave up three hits without an out, including an RBI double by Angel Pagans RBI double and Pablo Sandovals run-scoring single. Ziegler relieved Perez and gave up a single to Posey to load the bases, then walked Hunter Pence for the tying run. Arizonas four-run fourth inning opened with a fielding error by second baseman Joaquin Arias on Mark Trumbos groundball. Montero hit a bouncer to the third baseman Sandoval, who bobbled it just long enough for Trumbo to make it to second. The Diamondbacks greeted reliever Yusmeiro Petit with four consecutive hits in the fifth, including a leadoff double by Martin Prado, followed by Trumbos RBI single. Parra got his third RBI of the night with a ground out and Arizona led 6-2. The Diamondbacks got their seventh run after the Giants botched a rundown play between first and second. CLEVELAND -- Over the course of a long season, every team will experience some difficult losses. The Los Angeles Angels endured a really difficult one Thursday. Ernesto Frieri gave up a two-out grand slam to Nick Swisher in the 10th inning and the Cleveland Indians sent the Angels to a 5-3 loss on the final stop of a six-game road trip. The Angels were on the verge of a satisfying win after Albert Pujols two-run single gave them a 3-1 lead in the top of the 10th. Angels manager Mike Scioscia used rookie reliever Cam Bedrosian (0-1) to begin the bottom half and Frieri finished off the loss. "Ernie has been struggling a bit and we wanted to give them a fresh look," Scioscia said. "(Bedrosian) is a guy they hadnt seen and we hoped that he could make some pitches. Got close, he couldnt get it done." Frieri has given up six runs in his last three outings, including four Saturday in Atlanta and another on Tuesday against the Indians. "Today I missed a pitch again and I got hurt. It cost us the win," Frieri said. "Im fighting, man. I dont know. Been working, been watching videos, asking questions. It feels like nothing wants to go my way." Even though the calendar says its June, the loss wasnt easy to take. Starting pitcher C.J. Wilson, who allowed one run in seven innings, knows how important it is to not let games like this get away. "Were running out of games. Were almost halfway through the season and we need to win," Wilson said. "We cant afford to lose games like this." Swisher had gone 0 for 4 with three strikeouts before he hit a 1-2 pitch into the right-field seats to cap an improbable comeback. Pujols put the Angels ahead when he slapped a 3-2 pitch from Scott Atchison through the open right side of the infield to break a 1-all tie. The Indians were playing the slugger to pull. "Youve got to take something away, fortunately we were able to come back and win the game," Indians manager Terry Francona said. &qquot;Wed do it again, but it was hard to see that ball go through the infield. Orlando Brown Jr. Jersey. " Atchison struck out the first two hitters in the 10th before Kole Calhoun singled. Mike Trouts double, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, moved Calhoun to third. Trout also walked twice and has reached base safely in 36 of his last 37 games. Hes batting .407 (35 for 86) in his last 23 games. The Indians responded off Bedrosian (0-1). Michael Bourn drew a leadoff walk and took third on Jason Kipnis one-out double. Carlos Santana walked to load the bases and Frieri replaced Bedrosian. David Murphy flied out before Swisher delivered. Kyle Crockett (1-0) retired the final hitter in the 10th for his first major league win. Wilson and Justin Masterson both allowed one run in seven innings. Both pitchers had their starts pushed back by Wednesday nights rainout. Mastersons wild pitch put Los Angeles ahead in the second, but Bourn tied it with an RBI groundout in the third. Masterson held the Angels to four hits, walked three and hit a batter. Wilson allowed three hits, walked four and struck out six. Howie Kendrick doubled with one out in the second and took third on a groundout. With David Freese batting, Mastersons low and outside pitch skipped past catcher Yan Gomes, allowing Kendrick to score. Gomes led off the third with a single for Clevelands first hit. He moved to third on a walk and a fielders choice, and scored on Bourns grounder. NOTES: The teams will make up Wednesdays rainout on a mutual day off at Progressive Field, with July 28 being the most likely possibility. CURITIBA, Brazil -- Defending champion Spain salvaged some World Cup pride on Monday with a convincing 3-0 victory over Australia in their last match at the tournament. Cheapest Yeezy 350 Store . After losing their previous matches in Group B to the Netherlands and Chile, both teams took to Arena da Baixada in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba knowing they could not advance to the second round. David Villa, on his 97th and final appearance put Spain ahead in the 36th minute with his record 59th goal, guiding Juanfran Torres pass into the net with the inside of his right foot. Juanfran had been found by a typically incisive pass by Andres Iniesta. "We stepped up against Australia and won this match, and Im happy to have participated in the first goal," said the 32-year-old Villa, who has called time on his international career. "Its sad because we would have liked to have spent more time here, but thats how it is." Iniesta was at the heart of the second goal too, providing the pass for Fernando Torres to steer the ball past Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan in the 69th minute. Juan Mata, who replaced an emotional Villa early in the second half, added the third in the 82nd from close range, stroking the ball under Ryan after he was found in space by fellow substitute Cesc Fabregas. David Silva, who also came on late, went close in the 89th but his shot from outside the area went just wide. Though nothing, in terms of World Cup progress, rested on the game, Spain showed some of the clever passing football that has seen it dominate the game over the past six years -- winning Euro 2008, its first World Cup in South Africa in 2010 and then Euro 2012. With that domination now at an end, the task facing Spain is to manage the transition from an aging squad that has won everything in the game to a new generation of players waiting to take centre stage. "We went out with dignity," Del Bosque said. "These have been six years of which we have been first in the FIFA ranking, a generation of players that have taught others, and have shown themselves," he added. "We bow out with our head high knowing the future of the Spanish team has a good base regardless of who coaches it, with good veterans." In the early minutes of the match, Australia took the game to the champions, but it wasnt long before Spain asserted control and started dominating possession. "We started bright enough but you have to give credit to them, they are a quality team," Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said. "We looked jaded, tired, and gave away the ball too easily, so its disappointing." Australia, which lacked bite up front through the suspension of Tim Cahill, finished with zero points, its worst ever performance in a World Cup. On its 1974 debut, Australia garnered a point. However, the Socceroos were in an extremely tough group and pushed the Netherlands hard during its 3-2 defeat. For its part, Spain avoided the worst World Cup title defence in history. That label remains with the France team of 2002, which only secured one point in its goal-less campaign in the tournament co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. "What happened is in the past now," Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso said. "We tried to face our situation in the best manner possible. This is football, though, and we go home sad." ------ Lineups: Australia: Mat Ryan, Ryan McGowan, Jason Davidson, Matthew Spiranovic, Alex Wilkinson, Matt McKay, Mile Jedinak, Oliver Bozanic (Mark Bresciano, 72), Tommy Oar (James Troisi, 61), Matthew Leckie, Adam Taggart (Ben Halloran, 46). MONTREAL -- For a second year in a row, the Montreal Alouettes will start the CFL season with a new head coach. Len Dawson Jersey . Alouettes owner Bob Wetenhall announced Monday that Tom Higgins will be the clubs new head coach. The former Edmonton Eskimos and Calgary Stampeders bench boss replaces general manager Jim Popp, who took over on Aug. 1 when the inexperienced Dan Hawkins was fired only five games into the 2013 season. Wetenhall made it clear in a statement that he did not want Popp, who is considered one of the CFLs best GMs but has a career 16-20 record as a coach, to continue in both jobs. "As Ive expressed to the media in recent weeks, I wanted to continue with the formula which has brought us the success weve enjoyed these past 17 years -- having a full-time head coach and a full-time general manager to fill each of these positions," said Wetenhall. "The criteria we established was to find an individual familiar with the CFL; someone with success in that position and a background as a position coach. In addition, we sought an individual with a record for moulding and delivering championship teams. "In Toms seven years as a head coach he won three division championships along with a Grey Cup, and twice earned recognition as the CFLs coach of the year. His head coaching record of 72-53-1 speaks for itself. We welcome Tom to the Alouettes family." Popp had made no secret of wanting to continue coaching, but Wetenhall put out a statement recently saying candidates would be interviewed. A year ago, the Alouettes waited until Feb. 19 to name Hawkins, a former U.S. university coach with no experience of the Canadian game. He was 2-3 when he was fired with the team in disarray. Popp, the Alouettes GM since they returned to Montreal in 1996, took over as coach for the third time in his career and went 6-7. It marked only the second time since 1996 the team had a losing record, matching the 8-10 mark Popp put up in his only full season as head coach in 2007. It hurt that starting quarterback Anthony Calvillo was lost for the season in August to a concussion. This time, the team waited five days longer to name a new coach and came up with Higgins, who stepped down in December after five years as the CFLs director of officiating. Higgins did not even get introduced at a press conference. The club said "time constraints and personal obligations" prevented bringing him to Montreal for the announcement, but that he will talk to the media Tuesday on a conference call. He takes over a team that will not have CFL all-time passing leader Calvillo as its starter for the first time since 2000. Instead, 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and young prospect Tanner Marsh are pegged to replace the retired future Hall of Famer. Higgins, who will turn 60 on July 13, led the Eskimos to 13-5 records twice and won a Grey Cup in 2003 in his four years with the club. He had a 28-25 record in three seasons in Calgary from 2005 to 2007. "Tom has worked with and tutored many of the CFLs finest quarterbacks -- Doug Flutie, Henry Burris and Ricky Ray, to mention a few," said team president Mark Weightman. "His expertise will be invaluable in the development of Troy Smith and Tanner Marsh." Higgins has spent 23 years in various CFL jobs, including a stint as GM in Edmonton. A native of Woodbridge, N.J., and a former linebacker and defensive tackle, Higgins played for Calgary and Saskatchewan in the 1970s. Popp replaced Rod Rust as coach at the end of the 2001 season, but gave way for Don Matthews the following season. He stepped in again when Matthews left for health reasons in 2006. Marc Trestman, now coach of the Chicago Bears, coached the club from 2008-2012, winning two Grey Cups. Christian Okoye Jersey . Rockies manager Walt Weiss was unhappy, too. Weiss addressed the issue in a 15-minute meeting with his pitcher and catcher after the Rockies gave up 14 hits and lost 10-1. While Minnesota takes aim at its eighth win of November, the Canadiens will try to post just their third victory in nine games this month. http://www.prochiefsauthentic.com/Youth-Dustin-Colquitt-Elite-Jersey/ . -- Keith Aulie has joined the Tampa Bay Lightning. The New York Islanders snapped a five-year playoff drought in 2012-2013, which raised franchise expectations, leading to disappointment last season when the Islanders fell out of playoff contention. Off-Season Game Plan looks at an Islanders team that has accumulated some young talent, yet has a difficult decision to make. When the rest of the Metropolitan Division got off to a mediocre start, the Islanders sensed opportunity and made a trade to acquire Thomas Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres. It was an aggressive move, but potentially costly because, not only was Vanek moved again when the Islanders were out of contention, but the Islanders also owe the Sabres a first-round pick in either 2014 or 2015. Considering the potential franchise players (Jack Eichel, Connor McDavid) at the top of the 2015 Draft, there could be temptation to keep that pick, surrendering the fifth overall pick in this years draft. The natural leap there, however, is that the Islanders organization would be making a choice with the expectation that next seasons pick would have more value than this years pick and the fifth overall pick seems pretty valuable. If we listen to what Garth Snow told season-ticket holders, the expectation is that the Isles will make the pick this year. Another consideration for the franchise is that there have been talks to sell the club and a change in ownership can always be a factor in a teams front office decisions. In most cases, that tends to lead to more aggressive decisions, as new owners want to put their stamp on the team, but that may take some time before its going to a) happen at all and b) make a difference in the teams management. Aside from those factors, there should be some urgency for the Islanders to take advantage of John Tavares best years. Tavares will be 24-years-old by the time next season begins and its high time that the Islanders provided him with the supporting cast necessary to be a playoff team. That doesnt mean a total face-lift, but it means upgrading their goaltending (a recent trade for Jaroslav Halaks rights is a step in that direction), finding Tavares a new left winger and, if theyre really feeling ambitious, perhaps bringing in a veteran defenceman to handle top-four minutes. In past years there has been more of a defeatist sense with the Islanders, who have made the playoffs once since 2007, but its not quite that way this year. There is talent, both on the roster and on the way, and some optimism with the franchises upcoming move to Brooklyn. For that optimism to hold, however, the Islanders could use a productive summer of roster improvement. He suffered a knee injury at the Olympics, ending his year early, and his point production was driven more by high-percentage shooting than in years past, but hes hitting his prime years, so the Isles need to find him a left winger and figure out how to surround him with a supporting cast that can make the most of his talents. When the Islanders opened the 2013-2014 season, Kyle Okposo was coming off a season in which he scored four goals in 48 games and was facing competition from free agent addition Pierre-Marc Bouchard to fill the departed Brad Boyes spot at right wing on the top line. Fast forward to the end of the season and Okposo finished as the Isles leading scorer, even putting up 10 points in 12 games without Tavares before suffering his own lower-body injury. After handling a first-line scorers role and putting up his career-best season, expectations will be much higher for Okposo next year. One of the reasons that the Islanders are free to turn Tavares loose offensively is that Frans Nielsen plays such a reliable two-way game. Nielsen scored a career-high 58 points last season and put up positive possession numbers despite facing the toughest assignments and starting more of his shifts in the defensive zone. Was underrated and underpaid for years, now seems to be known and acknowledged enough to merely be underpaid. Highly-touted prospect Ryan Strome split his first pro season between the AHL (where he had 13 goals and 49 points in 37 games for Bridgeport) and the NHL, where his point production was mediocre, but his possession stats were excellent -- a sign of potentially good things to come. Stromes emergence as an offensive threat will help ease the pressure on Tavares and give the Islanders the scoring depth they need to be a legit playoff team. Few, if any, can get around the ice as quickly as Michael Grabner, who seems to create breakaways with ease, yet he didnt finish at a particularly high rate last season and hes never been much of a playmaker, so he hasnt been able to duplicate his 32-goal, 52-point rookie season of 2010-2011. It would be great if Grabner was a 30-goal scorer, but a consistent 20-plus would be okay too. It hasnt been the smoothest path for Josh Bailey, since being drafted ninth overall in 2008, yet there are three forwards from that draft (Steven Stamkos, Jordna Eberle, Derek Stepan) to record more than his 177 points since. He managed just eight goals last season, yet still hit for a career-best 38 points. It still seems as though there is room for him to have more favourable percentages that will lead to an offensive breakthrough, but only if he can consistently generate shots like he did during the 2012-2013 lockout season. 22-year-old Brock Nelson didnt get a lot of publicity, but had a strong rookie campaign nevertheless, delivering excellent relative possession numbers, and earning more ice time as the season progressed. As he matures, Nelson could be a fine complementary scorer and two-way forward; its a matter of finding the right spot for him. Its going to be difficult for Cal Clutterbuck to live up to his end of the Nino Niederreiter trade, but thats not Clutterbucks fault. Hes not a high-end skill player, but hits a lot, scores a little (a dozen or more goals in four of the past five seasons) and can be a useful bottom-six winger. Colin McDonald didnt stick in the NHL as a regular until he was 28-years-old, but hes held a regular spot in the lineup for the past couple seasons. McDonald is an inexpensive fourth-line option, but doesnt warrant a bigger role if the Islanders are going to be a playoff team. A tough guy who has scrapped 45 times over the past four seasons, Matt Martin has struggled to put up decent possession numbers, which makes it tough to justify his ice time, but its remained a constant, in the 11-12 minute range per game in four-plus NHL seasons. Martin has accrued a league-best 1266 hits over the past four seasons, leading the league in each of the past three. Veteran enforcer Eric Boulton is way overmatchedat the non-pugilistic part of the game, which does justify how little he plays for the Islanders, dressing for 38 of 127 games over the past two seasons. With Martin and Clutterbuck already providing a physical element, there doesnt seem to be as much need for Boultons presence. Casey Cizikas is a 23-year-old centre with good speed, and a physical game, but hes also struggled in possession terms. It may be a function of his linemates (most frequently, Martin and McDonald), but if Cizikas is going to rise up the depth chart at some point, then hell need to improve that aspect of the game. A lot of the improvement up front for the Islanders can come from young players like Strome, Bailey, Nelson and prospect Anders Lee, who showed well late in the season, but there is also an opening on Tavares left wing that needs to be filled, a spot that has been held by Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson in recent years. Free agents Mike Cammalleri, Jussi Jokinen or Marian Gaborik might be a worthy addition and allow the complementary young forwards to develop at a more reasonable pace. However, if a veteran isnt signed up front, some combination of Bailey, Nelson and Anders Lee could be adequate down the left side. Hes always been a really good puck-moving defenceman who turns in sensational relative possession numbers. He hasnt gained much ground offensively, since scoring 26 points in 62 games as a rookie, but Travis Hamonic is a beast on the blueline, facing tough assignments and logging more than 25 minutes per game last season. Hes the cornerstone of this group and at a bargain price. A funny thing happened on the way to Thomas Hickey being a massive bust, taken with the fourth overall pick in the 2007 Draft. Since landing with the Islanders, Hickey has been a positive possession player and handled more ice time late in the year, once Andrew MacDonald was traded. He doesnt have ideal size, and his point production is modest (26 points in 121 career games), but Hickey now has a foundation on which he can build his NHL career. The Islanders took a similar waiver-wire approach with Brian Strait as they did with Hickey, hoping that another teams cast-off would work out. Strait hasnt fared quite as well thus far, but is reasonably priced to fill a role as a seventh defenceman. Matt Carkner is a bruiser, though one that isnt trusted to handle a regular turn on the blueline and, when he does, it tends to be against lesser competition. So long as the Islanders want someone to tangle with heavyweights, Carkner is more than capable in that regard. Having both Carkner and Boulton seems like two big bodies for one need. After injuries slowed his progress, Calvin de Haan quickly worked his way into the Islanders lineup last season and was not only effective, but he had solid possession numbers while paired most frequently with Hamonic, which meant more difficult matchups. A smart blueliner who can move the puck, de Haan ought to play a big role next season after playing a big role down the stretch. Matt Donovan has been very productive in the AHL, putting up 119 points in 160 games, and had strong possession numbers for the Islanders in 52 games last season; strong enough that he deserves a regular turn on the blueline.excellent possession numbers. If he can improve his skating, he could be a real threat as soon as next season. While the Islanders could certainly use another veteran hand (Tom Gilbert? Mark Fayne?) to stabilize their defence, its also feasible that they could add a top prospect, like Griffin Reinhart, to the mix and depend on the development of young players, and possibly a healthier season for Visnovsky, to get improved results. Should the Islanders get Halak signed to a new contract, he will represent a notable upgrade over Evgeni Nabokov. Over the past three seasons, Halak has a .921 save percentage, compared to .910 for Nabokov. If Halak faced, say, 1500 shots, that would (with those percentages holding steady) result in a 16.5-goal difference. Theres also no guarantee that the Islanders will get Halak signed, so they could be forced to look into other options (Ryan Miller, Jonas Hiller, James Reimer), but Halak was clearly their preferred option. Part of the reason that the Islanders need more stability in goal is that their pair of 24-year-old prospects -- Anders Nilsson and Kevin Poulin -- havent been up to the task. In 72 career games, theyve combined for an .899 save percentage, which isnt nearly good enough. Its also a small enough sample that there is room for at least one of them to develop into a bona fide NHL goaltender. Top Prospects Player Pos. He hasnt been as consistently aggressive as might be expected for a blueliner with his size, but its pretty fair to consider that Reinhart will have a chance to earn a spot on the Isles blueline next season. Drafted 15th overall last summer, Ryan Pulock has a rocket shot from the blueline and put up 210 points in four WHL seasons. Hes the power play quarterback of the future and that ability gives him a higher ceiling than some of the others in the organization. Power forward Anders Lee impressed in a late-season audition with the Islanders, scoring nine goals and 14 points in 22 games, while putting up A second-round pick in 2012, Ville Pokka had a big year in his third season in the SM-Liiga in Finland (to say nothing of winning gold in the World Junior Hockey Championship), and the Isles still need to get him signed before June 1st. Given his play, the leverage likely rests with Pokka, as he looks like a quality blueline prospect. Drafted in the second round in 2012, Sebastian Collberg was the main piece that the Islanders received from Montreal in the Thomas Vanek trade. He has skills, but is on the small side and, as one might expect, has had more success in junior than in the Swedish Elite League to this point. Big and nasty blueliner Scott Mayfield had a decent first year as a pro, earning a five-game trial with the Islanders late in the year. He can use more seasoning, but his physical game is something that ought to endear him to the Islanders. Adam Pelech was a third-round pick in 2012 and hes a steady, smart defender. With some time in the AHL, he could develop in a shutdown role. Taken in the second round in 2011, Johan Sundstrom had 50 points in 99 AHL games since arriving from Sweden. He has good size and held his own in a checking role for 11 games with the Isles late in the year. 6-foot-5 goaltender Anders Nilsson counts as a prospect since hes played more AHL than NHL games, but he and Kevin Poulin are both battling for the backup job and, to this point, neither one has been able to grab it firmly. A scrappy winger who was signed as an undrafted free agent, Mike Halmo has made solid progress in his first two pro seasons and got into 20 games for the Islanders last season. He managed one point, but had solid possession stats. The Islanders have taken some home-run swings in the draft, with selections of skilled Russians Kirill Kabanov and Kirill Petrov, though its entirely possible that neither is going to ultimately end up playing for the Islanders. CHICAGO -- No matter how this one plays out in the end, Joel Quenneville will at least appreciate the show the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles have put on the Western Conference finals. Corey Linsley Super Bowl Jersey . For pure theatre, its hard to match this. A wild series between the two most recent champions will come to a close with one final act Sunday, a seventh game in Chicago to decide who will advance to the Stanley Cup finals. "The quality of the hockey has been fun to watch and (its) been fun to be a part of it at the same time," Quenneville, the Blackhawks coach, said Saturday. The Blackhawks won a double-overtime thriller at home and took Game 6 on Friday night in Los Angeles 4-3 to wipe out a 3-1 series deficit, sending it back to Chicago. Now, its win-or-go home for both teams. Whoever prevails will host the New York Rangers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals Wednesday night. The Kings, who dropped the first three games against San Jose in the opening round and went the distance with Anaheim, hope to become the first team to win three Game 7s on the way to the Stanley Cup finals. "Were using all our lifelines so far, and we plan on getting the job done yet again," Los Angeles Justin Williams said. If the Blackhawks win Sunday, it will be the second straight year they advanced after falling behind 3-1 in a series. Last year, they dropped three of the first four against Detroit in the conference semifinals before taking Game 7 in overtime on a goal by Brent Seabrook after Niklas Hjalmarsson had one disallowed late in regulation. Chicago went on to take out the Kings in the conference finals before beating Boston for its second Stanley Cup in four years. The Blackhawks looked like they were just about out of it after dropping Game 4. Instead, they jumped back into it with two thrilling victories, pushing a thrilling series to the limit. "You can feel its high-level hockey thats played for sure," Hjalmarsson said. "Theyre a machine-like team. They bring the same effort to every single game so we just have to try to match that. I really think this series deserves a Game 7, and I think the crowd deserves it, too. And I think its going to be a great finish to a great finish to a great series." Its coming down to one after Chicago pulled out two nail-biters. There was that double-overtime victory in Game 5 at home with Michal Handzus scoring the winner, and Game 6 Friday was about as tense. The Blackhawks survived thanks to a late surge after the teams traded leads in the third period, with Patrick Kane setting up Duncan Keith for the tying goal and then firing in the winner from a patch of ice near the painted Stanley Cup logo with 3:45 left. "We know that we can still beat this Chicago Blackhawks team," Drew Doughty said. "But we also know its not going to be easy either. Theyre going to have their best game in this Game 7, especially in their home rink." It would help if they contained Kane. He has come up big in the past two games with seven points after being held to just one in the first four games. He had two goals and an assist Friday and four assists in Game 5, compared to just one assist through the first four games. Hes been able to find at least some open ice, something he wasnt able to do earlier in the series, and the Blackhawks are feeding off that. "We have to do the same things we did in the first four games, not the last two -- check hard and deny him the puck, and when he has the puck, give him the least amount of time possible," defenceman Willie Mitchell said. Now, this series between two powerhouses comes down to one final game, and both teams have come out on top in tough spots. The Kings are 6-0 in elimination games this year. The Blackhawks have won nine of their past 11 elimination games. "Competitive guys, they find a way," Quenneville said. "(Friday) night is a good example. Third period, it doesnt look good and they dont change their approach. We know we have some guys that can make plays and have some ability to score. ... Were playing a real good team that has a lot of similar attributes as we do, but we have to give our guys (credit for) what theyve done, what theyve accomplished and how they handle these situations." Finch, a second-year social science student from Burlington, Ont., was honoured on offence after he guided the nationally third-ranked Mustangs (3-0) to a dominating 58-15 road win over defending two-time OUA champion McMaster (1-2), Saturday in Hamilton. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound sophomore was near perfect against the 2012 Vanier Cup finalists, completing 74 percent of his passes (26 of 35) for 449 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Three games into the season, Finch leads CIS in completion percentage (75.8) as well as touchdown-to-interception ratio (10-1). StFX receiver Devon Bailey, McGill running back Luis Guimont-Mota and UBC running back Brandon Deschamps were also up for the award. Kruba, a fifth-year social science student from Windsor, Ont., took home the weekly honour on defence thanks to his game-high nine tackles and two interceptions in the victory against the Marauders. The 5-foot-11, 210 pound senior picked off quarterback Marshall Ferguson on back-to-back McMaster drives in the third quarter, two plays which were quickly converted into Western field goals. Krubas two interceptions tie him for the CIS lead after three weeks of regular season action. Saint Marys lineman Rob Jubenville, Laval safety Vincent Plante and Calgary lineman Brett Wade were also nominated. Kolodzinski, a fourth-year student from Regina, was the choice on special teams after he was good on each of his five field goal attempts in a hard-fought 36-34 road victory over No. 8-ranked Manitoba (1-1), including the game-winning kick from 40 yards out with 18 seconds remaining in regulation. HOUSTON -- IndyCar fined Marco Andretti $2,500 on Sunday for failing to heed to an order from race control during the Grand Prix of Houston. Ryan Nall Jersey . Andretti ignored a blue flag during Saturdays first race to give way to leader Takuma Sato as Andretti tried to stay on the lead lap. Race control could have perceived that Andretti was holding up Sato to allow Andretti Autosport teammate James Hinchcliffe to catch the leader. Because Andretti ignored the blue flag, he was given a black flag and a drive-thru penalty. In addition to the fine, IndyCar placed Andretti on probation for three races beginning with Sundays race. Andretti Autosport was also fined $2,500. Andretti vehemently disagreed with the penalty following Sundays qualifying session. "My question was, what would have happened if James was leading?" he said. "Its the 20th lap of the race and the facts are I finished ahead of Sato. Because you have to fight. Its early in the race. If its late in the race, I would have moved over, they wouldnt have had to tell me to move over." Andretti had been spun by teammate Carlos Munoz earlier in the race to put him in position to be lapped by Sato. But his car was not damaged, and he went on to an eighth-place finish. Sato was involved in a later accident and finished 22nd. "I wasnt off the pace," Andretti said, arguing he was only in position to be lapped "because I got spun. If (the leaders) caught me by a whole lap, then they have a point. But I was one of the top three fastest cars out there." Jeff Fisher Jersey . - Houston defensive end J.
